One of the most important things every developer should have at least heard about are "design patterns". These are well though-through solutions for 'standard' problems.

At one point everyone will need to parse an XML-file. In C# there are standard libraries to handle this, but unfortunately in C++ this is not the case. There are several libraries which do handle it for you. On this page a plain-C xml-parser is presented with less then 200 lines of code without any dependencies and which can be dropped into your C/C++ project in no-time. Furthermore there are tutorials on starting with, creating a database, retrieving the information using stored procedures and display them on a website.
